Tift County may be consolidating its voting precincts

The Tift County Board of Elections is proposing to consolidate its voting precincts, and some voters aren't happy about the decision.
The board is proposing to consolidate 12 precincts into 1. They are planning to solidify the UGA-Tifton Campus Conference Center as the designated precinct.
According to board member Bob Swartz, the response to their proposed idea has been mixed.
He said the board has proposed the idea for reasons concerning efficiency, security and an overall better facility than those of the previous precincts.
"I think the main reason for doing it from an efficiency stand point is that we have greater control," said Swartz. "The board can be more involved at one location than they can at 12 locations."
Swartz added that some naysayers disapprove of the proposal because they feel it is disenfranchising people who make up the Democratic Party.
Swartz said some feel as though the board is making it hard for them to vote. He added that the concern for senior citizens is in reference to the fact that they don't drive and can't stand in long lines.
According to Swartz, senior citizens that use the chosen precinct will not have to stand in line, but will be given priority.
"We know there's going to be certain problems, but what we're trying to do is make darn sure that anybody that has the right to vote gets to vote and that vote will count."
The board will present their idea to the community on Monday, September 21 at the conference center. Upon the conclusion of the presentation, they will address concerns of the community.
Swartz said the board's final decision will be made on Monday, September 28.
