Tift County groups come together to feed children

Officials say they do this because during the school year students have access to things like free lunches and in the summer they don't. Local officials want to make sure kids aren't going hungry in the summertime. / Courtney Highfield

The Tift Area YMCA along with local churches and the local school system teamed up to kick off their summer feeding program Tuesday.

Last year this program was the second biggest feeding project in the nation; feeding over 55,000 children over the course of the summer.

Officials say they do this because during the school year students have access to things like free lunches and in the summer they don't. Local officials want to make sure kids aren't going hungry in the summertime.

The YMCA and local churches also make sure they are feeding these children nutritious meals in hopes of promoting a healthier lifestyle.

Officials say if your family needs help in making sure the kids aren't going hungry to contact the Tift Area YMCA at (229) 391-9622.
