      Teen drowns in boating accident

      Atkinson County emergency officials responded to a 911 call about a drowning in Willacoochee Thursday evening.

      Two teenage boys were fishing in a private pond off of Coochee Creek Road when their boat overturned.

      The boys clung to the boat and decided to swim towards the hill to safety. One of the teenage boys did not make it.

      Upon arrival, Atkinson County firefighters, EMS and police surveyed the scene and requested help from Coffee County Fire Department, Jeff Davis Fire Department, DNR, and other emergency personnel boats with sonar were launched to search for the missing teenager.

      Around 2 AM, Coffee County Fire Department indicated something at the bottom of the lake. Divers were sent in and retrieved the missing boy.

      The second teenager involved was not injured.
