Teacher remembered through outdoor classroom

Black and red colors were incorporated in the garden in honor of the teachers favorite college, the University of Georgia

Westover High senior Jordan Cox had to do a project to become an Eagle Scout, and after talking with others, he knew exactly what to do. Cox decided to build a garden in memory of one of his gifted teachers at the Dougherty County School System Gifted Center who passed away.

Kathy Nelson died in 2007 after a battle with cancer. The new garden will also act as an outdoor classroom for DCSS gifted students.

Kathy's husband Robert says even while battling the disease, Kathy was dedicated to her students. "She was getting ready for school, getting everything together, making sure she was always at school early enough to make everything ready for that first child to walk in the door," says Robert.

Kathy Nelson's family, the Gifted Center, and Cox were all pleased with the way the outdoor classroom turned out. School officials say students will start using the garden next week.
