Sumter County Fire & Rescue in need of new equipment

Sumter County Fire & Rescue needs new equipment to help serve you.

The department was founded in 2009 and given used equipment, and now five years later the need new equipment.

Right now, they service to more than 400 square miles and the fire chief tells us their equipment is wearing down fast.

So far, they've proposed an apparatus replacement program to the Board of Commissioners to provide funding for new pumpers and adding new tankers.

Sumter County Fire Chief John Ekaitis says, "you have to replace equipment over time and that's what we truly need to do. We have to replace equipment. It's any fire department in the United States, somewhere along the lines you're going to have to start replacing that apparatus."

The first phase of the replacement program could cost over one million dollars.
