Tift Regional Medical Professionals are reminding women to stay up to date on their breast exams.

Officials with the Women's Imaging Center recommend monthly self exams to catch the cancer early.

Back in 2009, women 50 and above were advised to have annual mammograms but now women encouraged to have the procedure done at 40.

Many people diagnosed with breast cancer are opting to have a double mastectomy but officials say not everyone has to have the procedure.

"That is something that is recommended if the patient has the BRAC 1 and BRCA 2 genes that is a strong genetic history of breast cancer. Not every woman is a candidate for a total bilateral mastectomy," said Debra Prince, Tift Regional Medical Center Women's Health Navigator.

Doctors say if you find something suspicious seek the help of a medical professional.
