      SOWEGA Council on Aging comes to Kiwanis

      Kay Hind with the SOWEGA Council on Aging spoke before the Kiwanis Club of Albany Wednesday afternoon about her new facility and government cuts.

      The new building will have two elevators and the building covers an entire block in downtown Albany.

      Hind says she is seeking grants and conducting fundraisers to pay for the building.

      She's been informed that the budget will be cut by $350,000 starting in July.

      In addition to these cuts, Hind expects sequestration to cut three to five percent of what's left. She says they are cutting back and making in-house changes. She adds that she wants to preserve the integrity of the program.

      In an attempt to recoup some of their funds, they are writing grants and doing fundraisers to generate extra funds.

      Wednesday afternoon, the council accepted a check from the Kiwanis Club of Albany and previously received $11,000 from Phoebe in the past few weeks..
