On Thursday evening, Smithville officials decided to cut their Police Department down to a one-man-team due to budget cuts.
Mayor Jerry Myrick says the town lost almost half of their SPLOST funding and in order to make it work without closing the department entirely, they decided to let go of three officers and a clerk in favor of having just a chief patrol the streets.
"We don't want to shut the entire city down but we've got to make dramatic cuts so that's what we're doing, we're just cutting it back and seeing how that goes. If that doesn't work, we'll have to try something else."
Myrick says he's hoping to meet with Lee County officials soon to see if they can work out an agreement to get some help before the cuts go into effect on July 1st.
