Small business owner excited for Walmart jobs
There are about 100 jobs coming to Sylvester. A Walmart Supercenter will be opening this summer and one business owner is glad there will be jobs in the area.
Some people are saying it may drive business away and others are looking on the bright side.
"I think putting more people to work in our area would be fantastic," Melanie Hurst said.
Hurst has owned Jessie's & Salon in Downtown Sylvester for the past 33 years and she says the Walmart will be great for the community.
"I hope and pray that it doesn't shut any of our small businesses down, but I don't think it will because so many of us go to Albany or Tifton to Walmart," she said.
Jennifer Calhoun is the manager of the Walmart Supercenter. She says Walmart won't hurt the hometown businesses.
"I feel that we can co-exist and both thrive in this community with bringing the citizens of Sylvester into the town and not having them drive 20 minutes one way or the other to do their shopping," Calhoun said.
The new 70,000 sq. ft. Walmart is scheduled to open in June. it will be bringing about 100 full-time, part-time, and temporary jobs. Hurst is confident the area will be okay.
"I hope and pray that everybody will pull together like we've always done for our small town and just be positive with each other and nobody fuss about it because it's coming and it is what it is," Hurst said.
Walmart has set up a hiring center in Downtown Sylvester on North Main Street.
They start accepting applications Monday, February 10 at 8 a.m.
