The Secretary of State advises Georgians about how to make careful decisions when donating to charity this holiday season.

Secretary of the State Brian Kemp advises residents to not give away any personal information on the phone , find out exactly how much of your money is actually going to the charity, and to be skeptical of organizations that list only post office boxes "PMB" threw the mail. Kemp adds, " I ask that donors familiarize themselves with an organization before giving."

Cordele resident Cathi East says she prefers to give away an item, and in person, that way she can see and know what she's contributing to.

Residents can research registered organizations in Georgia at www.sos.ga.gov .
