Pit bull attacks 2 Moultrie girls

Two children were injured in Moultrie when a pit bull dog got out of a kennel and attacked them. Moultrie police were called to a house on West Central Avenue late Thursday afternoon. Officer met with Shirley Ward, who stated the dog got out of a kennel on her property and attacked two children, a 3-year-old girl and an 8-year-old girl.

Moultrie-Colquitt County Humane Society Director Don Flowers said the 3-year-old was taken to Colquitt Regional Medical Center and required surgery. He said she was bitten in the leg, the armpit area and in the face, causing injury to her eyelid. The older girl was scratched up by the dog.

The dog was taken to the Humane Society following the attack, and Flowers said it was euthanized. Its head was sent to be tested for rabies because its most recent rabies vaccination had expired and no proof of current rabies shots was found.

The kennel the dog was in when it escaped appeared to have the door knocked off of its hinges, Flowers said. He believed the door and kennel were not secure and the damage could have happened when the dog escaped.
