Phoebe hopes to build up community through annual donation
Each year, Phoebe makes a donation on behalf of its hundreds of doctors to a local charity or organization. This year, they chose to go a step beyond that with their check to Flint River Habitat for Humanity.
Phoebe made the $5,000 Doctors Day donation at the Habitat ReStore on Thursday morning.
But they said they plan to also volunteer at an upcoming Habitat build to continue giving back.
"That's what Habitat was founded on was volunteerism and bringing the community together, and that's exactly what we do here and what Phoebe wants to be a part of, so we're really excited to be working with them on this," Flint River Habitat Executive Director Scooter Courtney said.
Ten years ago, Phoebe said its physicians decided that instead of receiving a gift for Doctors Day, they would rather have that money given to a local organization. Since then, that gift has become an annual tradition.
"Our job is to help out communities. That's why we went into medicine," said Dr. Kathy Hudson, president of the medical staff at Phoebe-Putney Memorial Hospital. "And that's what we're doing. We're helping our communities in other ways when people aren't sick and aren't in need of our services."
