Phoebe becomes South Georgia's only 'Baby-Friendly' hospital
Phoebe has a new banner in its lobby to mark becoming South Georgia' s only Baby-Friendly hospital.
This designation is part of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, which was started by UNICEF and the World Health Organization.
Jessica Kennedy, nurse manager for mother, baby and lactation, said it took them five years to earn this distinction because they had to completely educate and retrain their staff on current practices. Those include lactation support, skin-to-skin contact after birth, and leaving the baby with the mother at all possible times.
Kennedy said all that work is worth it.
"Sometimes that's hard, completely changing everybody's routine and things that they're used to doing, but when you think about it, being for the best for the patients, it's a lot easier to make it happen," she said.
