Palmyra Medical Center announced today that they have won an appeal decision granting them the right to begin delivering babies.
Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital first filed the appeal, saying the additional service wasn't needed in the area. Palmyra hasn't had the ability or approval to have an obstetric unit in more than 20 years. Palmyra can now move forward with construction plans and looks forward to having the ability to deliver newborns. Officials say the new unit could lead to more jobs.
"Possibly so, yes because we'll be recruiting OB nurses to join the staff and additionally some potential obstetricians who may want to move into the area," said Palmyra CEO Mark Radar.
There is no estimated timeline for when the obstetrics unit will open.
