Officials unveil the portrait of Judge Herbert Phipps during a ceremony Monday afternoon

Officials from the county and state gathered at the judicial building Monday afternoon for a portrait unveiling and hanging of Judge Herbert Phipps.

Judge Phipps is now the first African-American judge to have his portrait hung on the second floor making it a historic event for Albany.

Phipps was appointed to the Court of Appeals of Georgia in 1999 and became Presiding Judge in April of 2010. Phipps has also been heavily involved in the community serving on multiple boards and foundations.
