After receiving multiple complaints of a Lee County intersection's compromising traffic, the Georgia Department of Transportation has decided to lower the speed limit on the stretch of Highway 82 just before Hickory Grove Road from 65 miles per hour to 55.
Kimberly Larson with GDOT says the department studied the intersection to see if the change was warranted and after seeing the amount of traffic needing to turn out of Hickory Grove Drive onto the highway, the lower speed limit will allow those people making the turn to be more safe.
Larson says many people were in favor of the change and think it will not only help the congestion at the intersection but will make a nicer transition into the Albany area which already has a speed limit of 55 mph.
Lee County Board of Commissioners Vice Chairman Ed Duffy whose represents the district the intersection is in says he has been receiving many concerned calls of the Hickory Grove Road intersection and is a big supporter of making the area safer.
Larson says as soon as the new signs come in, they'll be installed and enforced so drivers using the highway should keep the new speed limit in mind when driving.
