Hearts are heavy in the City of Dawson Friday after the Dawson Mayor Christopher Wright was shot.

Agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation tell FOX 31 News that just after 10:00 p.m. Thursday, the Dawson Police Department received multiple calls that shots were being fired at 545 Crawford Street where the Mayor lives.

Officers say when they arrived to the scene Wright was found at the residence with gunshot wounds.

Mark Pro, Special Agent with the GBI says, "right now at this point we've conducted a neighborhood canvas of all the streets that are close to the Mayor's home. We've talked to a lot of people in the neighborhood. At this point we have not identified any suspects."

Mrs.. Humphries lived just two doors down from where the shooting happened. She tells FOX 31 News that she's still trying to make sense of it all.

"I don't know how to describe it. It was so unreal, it seemed unreal like a bad dream that I just wanted to walk up from like this is my friend. Why is he down on this ground? Why did they do this? I couldn't say anything but oh God, oh God and start praying right there on the scene."

Police say Wright was transported to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, Georgia.
