Music group helps kick off education campaigns

Students kicked off I Can and the annual Million Word Campaign. For the Million Word Campaign, students have a goal to read one million words by the end of the school year.

The Lamar Reese Magnet School of Arts is also hoping parents get involved with their kids through I Care. The Dougherty County program has parents teach students a different life lesson each week.

Lamar Reese brought in Gabriel Powell and New Priest to celebrate the kick off. Powell wrote songs specifically to encourage the students to keep up with their schoolwork.

"We want to send a message that it's important to read so that you may be knowledgeable, so that you will be able to read contracts. We're pushing them to take education very seriously," says Gabriel Powell, singer and former Dougherty County School student.

Today also began the annual Million Word Campaign where students read one million words by the end of the school year.
