Representatives from the office of Congressman Sanford D. Bishop Jr. presented students from the region with awards for the 2013 Congressional Art Competition on Thursday.
Officials say The nationwide high school visual art completion is a way to not only honor those talented students but to encourage them to continue in the field.
Deerfield Windsor Junior Abbie Hutchins beat out dozens of students from as far away as Columbus for the first place title in the second congressional district of Georgia and will now have her penciled sketch displayed in the Capitol for the next year.
Hutchins says she's surprised and honored to win after only getting into art two years ago. Hutchins says she thinks it's a great way to encourage students to participate in the arts, which is an outlet that helps her both creatively and academically.
