Southwest Georgians met at the Civic Center Saturday evening for the Black History Celebration, an event that centered around the NAACP.

The Albany-Dougherty branch of the NAACP held the event to teach those not only about the local ties of the association, but to celebrate the group's national achievements throughout the years.

"We've had many reasons to celebrate and tonight is one of those days that we're taking in this city of Albany to effectively celebrate black history," said Albany-Dougherty NAACP Interim President Marvin Jones.

The event featured National NAACP Region Five Director Kevin Myles as the speaker, which Jones says will really help the audience connect with the group's national history.
