Hearing your name called at graduation as you cross the stage is a pretty big deal, and for one Lee County High graduate, it means even more.
Hugh Slaton wasn't sure at first if he would be able to hear his full name called when he graduated. The reason; his full name includes 14 middle names.
Slaton's full name is Hugh Dorsey Abdul Jalil Francis Willie Albert Barney Brian Kowalski Jeffrey Faith Love Star Breeze Slaton the III. Slaton says all of these names have quite the significance. Some of them are names of relatives and some have spiritual meaning to his mother.
Slaton says even he had trouble remembering all of his names; he didn't have it completely memorized until he was in the 9th grade. But now that he knows the meaning behind each name, his unusually long name means a lot to him.
He says most people don't believe that he has 14 middle names, which is why he carries a copy of his birth certificate in his wallet. Slaton says he's had to pull it out on many occasions, including when he went to get his driver's license. The DMV decided to stick to just three names however.
Slaton says for a while the school was unsure of whether or not they would read all of his names aloud on Graduation day; this upset him and his mother. But after careful consideration, and because the names are on his birth certificate, Principal Kevin Dowling says they will honor his name and read them all.
Dowling says they have read all the names of Slaton's siblings and they aren't going to cheat him out of the same thing.
