Officials with the Lee County Animal Shelter say around 7:00 p.m. Monday night, three puppies were dropped off outside of their gate.
Michael Sistrunk, the Lee County Public Works Director, says the owner who dropped the dogs off is actually breaking a county ordinance. In Lee County they have an ordinance that states you are not allowed to abandon an animal.
Sistrunk says it's important to bring the animals inside the shelter so they can get information about the animal, shot records, etc. Having all of these things makes it much easier to find homes for the dogs or cats. Sistrunk says there is a fee of $30 when you surrender an animal but they can work with you on the price depending on what shots the animal has.
Shelly McPhaul with the Best Friends Humane Society in Worth County says they also have a problem around there with people abandoning animals. McPhaul thinks people abandon them rather than bringing them inside the shelter because they are afraid they might have to pay money that they don't have. McPhaul says while they ask for a donation, there is no mandatory fee when you surrender an animal.
