United States Senator Johnny Isakson has released the following statement in wake of the announcement yesterday that Ambassador Princeton Lyman, U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan and South Sudan, will be stepping down.
"I am grateful for Ambassador Lyman's leadership during such a crucial period of relations between Sudan and South Sudan. He has been a tremendous advocate for the continued implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, and his leadership was essential in facilitating last year's successful referendum for independence in South Sudan. He kept me informed on developments in Sudan and South Sudan throughout his time as Special Envoy, and I have always found his frank assessment of the challenges facing the relationship between the two countries extremely helpful. I thank Ambassador Lyman for his service, and I will continue to work with my colleagues in the Senate to build upon his work toward a lasting peace in the region."
