Inmate population decreasing over time
Jail Director, Colonel John Ostrander says in 2012, the average population was 825, and in 2013 the average population was only 768.
Dougherty County is a 1230-bed facility, which made their facility at about 63% capacity.
Colonel Ostrander attributes this decrease to a meeting held between various agencies in August including the sheriff's office and District Attorney agreeing to become more efficient.
This efficiency ranges from completing paperwork, to making sure inmates are transferred or released in a timely manner. He says this kind of team work is rarely found where different agencies of the law can come together and make a difference.
He said, "Our goal for 2014 is simply to continue employing the strategies that have proven to be successful."
