The temperatures are starting to drop as we make our way into the cooler months, and many are turning to the use of space heaters since it's not chilly enough to fully turn on the heat.
As people use the portable heaters, fire officials are stressing the importance of using them safely and correctly so they don't become dangerous.
"It is recommended by Underwriters Laboratory that you stay with a space-heater. It's not like your central air heating unit, it is a portable unit so a portable unit can overheat," said Albany Fire Department Assistant Chief Rub Jordan.
Any combustible items should be at least three feet away from the unit which should always be plugged in directly to a wall, never an extension cord because that could cause a shortage and possible fire.
