The Lee County Housing Authority Board of Commissioners held a special meeting Thursday afternoon to pass a resolution approving a significant amendment to its Agency Plan.
Under this plan, the Authority will convert its structure from the current public housing structure to a multi-family Section 8-based property.
This will change the financial structure that will allow the housing authority to operate like a private property owner.
"One significant change will be the flat rent structure that we currently have will go away so everything will be income-based," said Housing Authority Director Dan McCarthy.
Thirty percent of tenants' income will go toward rent.
The Board held a public hearing before the meeting where the majority of tenants approved of the conversion.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development requires the Authority to meet certain requirements over the next year.
The conversion will go into effect January 2015.
