Insurance companies are reporting Georgia leads the nation in the number of insurance claims resulting from lightning.
Nearly $15 million was paid out to one insurance company in 2013. Spring and summer are the times of year when lightning is most frequent. The storms that moved through Thursday had quite a bit of lightning strikes with them.
The Albany Fire Department is letting people know to stay safe this summer from severe storms and frequent lightning.
"There are lightning rods and lightning resters out there that will actually take the electricity if it does hit your house and makes an easier path to the ground," Albany Fire Chief James Carswell said. "Clearing tall trees around the house."
The 2014 Lightning Safety Awareness Week starts Monday.
