A Georgia State Representative is behind a bill that was influenced by the health of former president Jimmy Carter.

Representative Mike Cheokas is working to pass the Honorable Jimmy Carter Cancer Access Treatment Act.

It seeks to provide more advanced medication to Georgia residents, who have stage 4 advanced, metastatic cancer.

According to Representative Cheokas, insurance companies require cancer patients to follow a protocol before receiving certain types of medication.

Cheokas said this protocol delays the amount of time cancer victims have to wait before receiving their prescriptions.

This bill, according to Cheokas, will knock down the lengthy time constraint and allow cancer victims to receive the same treatment as the former president.

"Cancer is a non-partisan issue," said Representative Cheokas. "It affects young and old, black and white, rich or poor; It really doesn't matter," he added.

Cheokas said he is confident that the legislation will pass through the House and Senate.
