A Georgia inmate convicted of rape and murder has become the first person executed in the United States since the botched lethal injection of a prisoner in Oklahoma in April.
Authorities say 59-year-old inmate Marcus Wellons was pronounced dead at 11:56 p.m. EDT Tuesday after a one-drug injection of the sedative pentobarbital at the state penitentiary in Jackson. Corrections officials reported no complications.
In 1993, Wellons was convicted and sentenced to death for the 1989 slaying of his 15-year-old neighbor, India Roberts, a high school sophomore from the Atlanta suburbs.
Elsewhere, a Missouri inmate convicted in the killings of two women in 1996 was executed early Wednesday, and a Florida inmate is facing scheduled execution Wednesday evening.
