It was probably a merry Christmas if you received new electronics this year, but police say you now need to know how to protect those gifts.

Cpl. Dillard Glover of the Albany Police Department said the best thing you can do is record the serial numbers, whether you write them down or take a photo of them.

You can also get those items, including TVs, cameras, tablets and video game consoles, engraved for free by APD.

Officers can then add them to their registry so you both have a record of it.

Cpl. Glover said this is a big help if you gifts are ever stolen or lost.

"So if someone tries to pawn it, it gets identified and it can get recovered and turned back to you because one, there's the serial number, and two, having that identifying marking on there," he said.

To register and engrave your items with APD, all you need to do is call to make an appointment at 229-431-2100.
