The Georgia State Fire Marshal TMs Office is investigating a morning fire that damaged a Lee County home on Berkeley Drive.State officials are involved in the case because what started out as a fire may be an actual cover-up for a burglary as authorities suspect the home was set aflame after the crime.Lee County fire officials received word early Saturday morning that flames and smoke was coming from inside the home. When firefighters arrived at the residence, they took action to put out the flames. While inside looking for the initial cause of fire, they discovered signs of foul play. It's pretty obvious that there was a burglary and at this point, that's why it's a continuing investigation, said Chief James Howell, Lee County Fire Department. No one was inside the home when the fire occurred.Lee County Sheriff TMs officials are also looking into the case and a reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the fire.If you have information on the case, please contact the Georgia Arson Control Hotline at 1-800-282-5804, Lee County Sheriff's Office at 229-759-6012 or 229-759-6034, or Albany-area Crime Stoppers at 436-TIPS.Stay connected to MySouthWestGA.com as stories develop and the FOX 31 Newscast at 10 PM.
