Former Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital healthcare worker Melody Milton, also known as Melody Green, is charged with tax fraud.
A legal document states that from October 1, 2011 through March 19, 2012 the woman engaged aggravated identity theft, theft of government property, and check fraud using the Turbo Tax website.
Milton is accused of using the Turbo Tax website to conduct a "check broker" business.
A special agent with the United States Secret Service states that there is probable cause that 36 envelopes of mail delivered to Milton's P.O Box is evidence of the criminal offenses.
Several checks averaging $9,500 were sent to the woman's P.O. Box in Albany. The criminal complaint states that 200 checks totaling about $1.1 million were deposited into Milton's Sun Trust Bank account.
It's suspected that Milton could have obtained social security numbers from patients at the Phoebe Home Health Care facility on 14th Street in Albany.
Brad Hallford, VP/Chief Compliance Officer of Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital released the following statement.
Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital is conducting an internal investigation in relation to a former employee charged with tax fraud, as well as implications involving a stolen laptop computer. The employee charged with tax fraud has been terminated. Phoebe officials believe the two cases are separate and unrelated but are conducting a thorough internal investigation in cooperation with the Secret Service and US Attorney's Office on the tax fraud case.
Individuals whose names and other personal information were stored in the stolen laptop will be contacted. At this time, there is no reason to believe that any personal information stored on the stolen laptop has been accessed.
