Dougherty County residents met at the Flint Riverquarium on Thursday evening to honor former Dougherty County Judge Herbert Phipps.

Judge Phipps began his career in the county and was recently named Chief Judge of the Georgia Court of Appeals. Many people came out to celebrate his achievement, which he said means a lot.

"It's a great honor to have moved up the judicial ladder to that level and I've been able to do that because of the support and encouragement by people here in Dougherty County and Southwest Georgia."

Residents will continue to honor the accomplished judge after Mayor Dorothy Hubbard proclaimed August 22nd as "Judge Phipps Day" in Albany.
