Festival aimed to stop violence in Tifton
Promoting non-violence in the Tifton community.
That's the goal behind The Greater Tift Area Stop the Violence Committee's Peace and Unity Festival.
The event is the brain child of Tifton Commissioner Melissa Chevers who says she wants to do what she can to better the community.
She says this an attempt to get a Neighborhood Watch started in south Tifton.
Commissioner Chevers says, "when someone is killed in Tifton, it doesn't just effect the family it also effects the community."
The festival featured music, food, praise dances, and local speakers.
One of the speakers at the festival was Lisa Golson, the sister of a victim who was murdered in April.
Golson says she wants to put an end to these useless acts of violence.
She says, "I think about my brother everyday, not just when his birthday comes around, but everyday."
The next Stop the Violence event is Saturday at Travelers Rest Baptist Church in Tifton.
