EMS gain new skills in Lee County

Lee County Fire services will be combining their efforts, with EMS workers in the hope of spreading the benefits to the entire county.

The Lee County Board of Commissioners voted tonight to cross train their EMS workers as firefighters, while still leaving the two services as separate entities.

Chairman Rick Muggridge says the board had three separate options to choose from, and he's confident they made the right decision.

"We could've hired 18-new firefighters, trained 54-voluntary firefighters, or cross train the EMS workers to be able to fight fires as well. And that was our ultimate decision," said Muggridge.

Commissioners also passed their budget for next year, with most describing it as "tight" but even.
