Empty school buildings up for demolition

Unused buildings set to be razed this year. / Jessica Fairley

Albany neighborhoods are about to get a cleaner look.

The Dougherty County School System is planning to raze several old buildings including:

      - Five buildings on 400 South Monroe Street that were formerly part of the Exceptional Student Program
      - Mami Brosnan Elmentary School at 601 North Monroe Street
      - Two buildings at 601 Flint Avenue that were part of DCSS Special Programs

School officials say they don't have a use for the structures and they're unsafe.

Vandals have raided the properties and they've been locked for some time.

The mandatory initial bid for contractors is next week.
