      Dude, where's my car?

In our Facebook story of the day, you wanted to know how long you can keep an abandoned car on the side of the road.FOX 31 spoke to Major Keith Houston with the Lee County Sheriff TMs Department who says once they notice or receive a call about an abandoned vehicle the first thing they do is check to make sure it isn TMt a stolen vehicle. After that, they put a bright yellow tag on it with the section of the Georgia State Code referring to abandoned vehicles and give the owner five days to properly remove or tow the car. After five days the sheriff TMs department takes matters into their own hands and calls a tow truck company to come get the vehicle.Houston said in no way are taxpayers responsible for this and none of their money is used towards towing these vehicles. The owner of the vehicle is the only one responsible for paying the fees when they come to pick up their car.Ben Roberts, a code enforcement officer for Lee County, said they have a problem with another kind of abandoned vehicles too. Roberts says these are referred to as junk vehicles and are cars that are no longer operable and sit in back yards for an extended period of time. Roberts says each home is limited to one junk vehicle and they should keep it covered so children can TMt get inside.
