Dougherty Co. school board approves its own pay raise
The Dougherty County school board just decided to give itself a big raise.
Members of the board voted Monday to increase their monthly salary from to $1,200 for the board chair, $1,100 for the vice chair, and $1,000 for board members. The chair currently receives $300 per month, while members earn $250 per month.
This is the school board's first raise since 1951.
The board's resolution for the pay increase said this will put it "on a competitive level with comparable Georgia school systems."
"As a school board, we're never off the clock," Chair Velvet Poole said. "We can be at Wal-Mart, we can be somewhere, and people ask us questions, so we're always available. And all seven board members have actually committed themselves that, wherever we're at, we have a question, we try to get that question answered."
The raise must be approved by the General Assembly before it goes into effect.
