The Dougherty County Sheriff's Department says many businesses may have fallen victim to a massive check fraud ring. Now one person is in jail.
34-year-old Steven Smith was arrested after deputies say he was caught trying to cash a fraudulent check at the Heritage Bank in East Albany Wednesday.
Smith told investigators he was one of many homeless men picked up to go cash several checks at locations across Southwest Georgia.
Deputies say it appears to be complicated and organized ring.
"Basically this is a group that utilizes lookouts, utilizes some pretty good computer equipment and also are able to, whoever they pick up, put their names on the checks without any difficulty," said Captain Craig Dodd. "So they can pick up anyone they want to and talk them into doing this for them."
It's possible that other banks, stores and check cashing business could have been hit yesterday. If you you're a victim, you're urged to call the sheriff's department at 431-3222.
