Distracted driving leads to school bus crash
Wed, 07 May 2014 02:49:04 GMT — FOX 31 News has learned the cause of the school bus accident from Monday on Sylvester Road. Police say the driver of the Ford pick up truck was not paying attention when he hit the bus. Police say 24-year-old Stephen Botton hit the bus causing the bus to move 19 feet. At the time of the crash, there were ten students on the bus and all were brought to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital for treatment. Police say they could see a decrease in accidents if drivers just simply paid attention. Lieutenant M.J. Wood with the Dougherty County Police Department says, "probably 90 percent of wrecks are caused by distracted driving. If drivers were paying attention to what was going on then the accidents could be avoided so we encourage everybody when you're driving that should be your number one focus, driving the vehicle and everything else should be put aside."
The bus driver 31-year-old Shaniqua Culbert has been released from the hospital, and the truck driver, Stephen Botton is currently in fair condition.
