Deadline to donate, apply for fans extended

Commissioner Hughes is getting the word out about a local kickball team donating fans and challenging other teams to do the same.

The deadline to donate fans to those suffering in the heat in Tifton has been extended.

Organizers of the "Tifton: We're Your Biggest Fans!" drive say there has been a tremendous response. About 50 fans have been collected so far and more are needed for those who have submitted applications to receive one.

The organizations involved in the drive are the Tifton Gazette, the United Way of South Central Georgia, One Street At A Time, Cottongim Services and Downtown Tifton Farmers' Market.

"We have a lot of people in our community that are suffering from not having the use of air conditioners so we thought this could be one way to give back to the community for the elderly and those without fans," Tift County Commissioner Melissa Hughes said.

Hughes is getting the word out about a local kickball team that is challenging other local teams to donate fans.

"We're Tifton Kickin' Kuties, a kickball team, in the community and our slogan is 'We're kicking as a team to save our community' and with Commissioner Hughes, we're donating fans and trying to get the other kickball teams in our area to get involved," Tonya Whitehead said.

"It's a challenge. We're challenging these other teams," Hughes said.

You may apply for a fan through July 11, and donate fans through July 12 at the market.
