DCSS Teacher of the Year named

Lamar Reese Magnet School teacher Melissa Childs beat out 26 fellow teachers to be named the county-wide teacher of the year on Thursday evening / Colby Gallagher

Eight top finalists for the Dougherty County School System's Teacher of the Year were honored during a banquet Thursday evening, but out of everyone Lamar Reese Magnet School teacher Melissa Childs was named the county winner.

Childs beat out 26 others for the title based on her background of having multiple degrees and a special certification in reading and says the win is a confirmation to continue in the direction she's going.

"I would be excited! Humbled, but excited and I would just go back into my classroom and continue to do what I've always done, and that's to teach the babies," said Childs before she was announced the winner.

Childs will now compete for the state-wide teacher of the year title next May in Atlanta.

To see Childs at work, tune into Good Day Friday morning where Melanie Kendall will be going live from her classroom.
