Dawson Police Lieutenant Marcus LeMacks was arrested and charged with theft by taking at the Albany Mall Sears.

The 42-year-old was under investigation by Sears for two months and they have video surveillance of him taking items and putting them into his personal vehicle.

At this time, Sears is working with Lee County law enforcement to see if they can obtain a search warrant and search his home for more stolen items.

Officials estimate LeMacks stole between $1,100 and $1,200 worth of merchandise.

All of his police issued weapons and credentials have been returned to the Dawson Police Department.

FOX 31 has learned that LeMacks was hired by the Dawson Police Department in June of 2009 from Leesburg. Officials with the Dawson PD say LeMacks is and was an excellent employee.

Dawson Police Chief Charles Whitehead says, "it's a sad for the Dawson Public Safety Department because we hate that this incident happened, but we lost an excellent employee for the time being."

Chief Whitehead adds that LeMacks is currently suspended without pay pending the outcome of the court case.

For the past month, Officer LeMacks was also part-time as a patrol officer for the Warwick Police Department.

As of 1:15 p.m., LeMacks has resigned according to police chief David Morris.
