The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says it has been asked to look into a law enforcement raid that resulted in a toddler being seriously injured by a flash grenade.

The GBI said in a news release that agents met Tuesday afternoon with Mountain Judicial Circuit Brian Rickman, who asked them to investigate the May 28 incident in Habersham County.

Bounkham Phonesavanh was injured when authorities used a flash grenade while executing a no-knock search warrant at the home where the 19-month-old was staying.

Rickman asked the GBI to determine whether the child's injuries resulted from a criminal act.

Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell has said officers were searching for a potentially armed drug suspect and didn't know children were inside. He has said officers followed protocol.
