County recovery teams converge on drowning

Multiple agencies were called out to the Alapaha River on Saturday night, after reports of two teens that had gone under shortly after 7:00 PM.

Atkinson County Sheriff, David Moore reports that a group of teens were enjoying a day on the river, when two of them slipped below the surface and never came up.

Fire, EMS, and Sheriff officials from both Atkinson and Berrien County converged on the scene and discovered the body of one of the victims by 9:30 PM Saturday night. Sheriff Moore says the victim was 16-years-old and is described as a Hispanic male.

At 11:30 PM crews discovered the body of the second teen, a black male between the age of 17 and 18.

At this time the Atkinson County Sheriff's Department believes this to be a freak accident, and have handed the two bodies over to the Berrien County Coroner's Office for autopsy.
