Commissioner pushes to rid Albany of blight

This structure at 301 North Monroe is set for demolition

The blight issue still has tempers flaring, especially on the City Commission.

In Tuesday's City Commission meeting, commissioner Jon Howard went off the agenda and complained about the blight issue. Three houses on his street have been foreclosed on and stand empty. A homeless man was found in one home, high on drugs, according to Howard. He says no one should be faced with that kind of situation. Howard asked Judge Willie Weaver to be more strict when it comes to owners of blighted properties. Judge Weaver said owners are given roughly 30 days to either rehabilitate or tear down a dilapidated structure. The owners are given more time if they need to raise money to do either.

Judge Weaver said Tuesday he will consider taking a more strict approach in the future.
