Commission concerned for homeless woman

Commissioners discuss homeless woman and how to help. / From file

The Dougherty County Board of Commissioners met Monday and discussed several issues including a homeless woman camping out near Newton Road.

The woman has reportedly been using the front of a commercial business as a camping site with permission from the owner. The commission is concerned that this poses a threat for her safety, as well as the safety of the public.

"If she's on a private right-of-way and she has the permission, then there's nothing that we can do about it. However, we have asked our county attorney to look into it, to see if there's anything we can do to help her," said District 5 commissioner, Gloria Gaines.

Local citizens have been calling the commission requesting something be done for the woman, however reports are that the woman has refused any suggestion of going to a shelter.

She has also been arrested multiple times by both the Dougherty County Police Department and other agencies in the area. Stay connected to and the FOX 31 News at 10 for more on this story as it develops.
