Colquitt Co. school to be first Medical STEM elementary school
MOULTRIE, Ga. —
Sunset Elementary will be the first Medical STEM elementary school in Georgia.
“In the planning process, we didn’t realize that, but it’s very unique and we’re very proud of our Colquitt County students right here at Sunset Elementary school,” Principal Josh Purvis said. “We’re kind of breaking the mold, and offer them some learning that nobody else has to offer in the state.”
All students will soon be hands-on in the lab using equipment, as a part of the activity rotation every day.
This program is not meant to replace any of the current programs at the school, but instead, used in addition to what the school offers.
According to Dr. Purvis, this is a great time to explore student’s interest in the medical field.
“We want to do our part to prepare our students to be college and career ready,” Dr. Purvis said. “So, the medical field is a field that is always going to be around, and it’s not going to go away. So, by allowing our students to interact with some of those content areas and some of those standards while in elementary school.”
The Medical STEM program will start in the 2017-2018 school year.
