A Tifton pastor is speaking out about the importance of HIV/AIDS awareness, specifically among African Americans.

Reverend Rudolph Porter at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church just brought in Dr. Cameron Nixon to give the second of three lectures he hopes to have at his church.

Porter is a masters student at Albany State University and says he got involved after watching a documentary in his Social Policy class.

"They asked me if I was addressing it from the pulpit," Porter said. "And I had to answer quite candidly 'not as vividly and as often as I should' and I lost a brother in 2002 to AIDS. We told the 'C lie.' We said it was cancer and we need to make the community aware of this virus."

Reverend Porter says there was a good turnout and hopes to have another lecture later this year.
