Businesses team up to curb crime

As a way to prevent future crimes from happening as we head into the holiday season, East Albany managers teamed up with the Albany Police Department on Tuesday to introduce a Business Watch system.
"Once these businesses start talking, they can pass the information so if it's a person who's been arrested for shoplifting in any one of those businesses, then that person's name, picture, and whatever information about them can be shared between businesses," said Captain Michael Persley.
By texting the word BIZALERT to 888-777, businesses are automatically entered into the notification system and can stay up-to-date on any crimes happening at nearby stores.
Lawonna Barber, the General Manager of Wing Dixie and Deli on Cordele Road, says her store has already been targeted by a burglar twice since August and she's hoping with the help of others they'll be able to catch the thief.
Other store managers say, of course, there's always healthy competition, but right now their biggest priority is working together to ensure each other's livelihood.
